It is obvious that an unprotected opening in the altitude, whether in the home or in commercial premises, is not safe. This could lead to dangerous falls that could have serious consequences in many ways. However, it is equally dangerous to have  a fence that is not sufficiently high to prevent accidental or other falls over the edge of the balcony, staircase, platform and the like.

The fence is, therefore, an important component. It is not only a designer’s addition but the main safety element.  No matter where the balcony, platform, staircase and the like are positioned, whether in a home or business setting, the free edge must be bounded by a fence so that everyone can use it safely.

But what’s the rationale when it comes to fences? How can you be sure that your solution meets the legal requirements?

Note: The regulations governing the construction of both residential and commercial buildings change over time. If you are building and installing a fence, it is your responsibility to check current parameters and regulations that may be specific to your industry or sector.

The law

There is a difference in the minimum height of fences designed for the interior/exterior of the building.

Inside the building, the height of the fence from the finished floor point to the top of the fence must be at least 0.9 m. This height must be maintained until the final height on the handrail.

That height is different for the exterior. The fence should be 1m away from the finished floor.

These are the minimum heights. You can choose higher fences, as well. Consider what the fence should be used for and where? You may want to consider additional safety if children are present. In fact, it is for this last reason that laws concerning the height of fence in residential and commercial buildings have been changed.

Regulation and certification

Every business should take care of the safety of its buildings. Fences and handrails are just two factors that must meet current safety parameters.

Standards in this field should be respected for health and safety reasons.

Summary

The regulation governing the height of fences and their use in residential and commercial buildings is strict for a reason. You are responsible for the safety of your staff and all visitors using your facility.

Fencing is an effective barrier to prevent people from falling from a height, while handrails also play an important safety role. Always keep them in good condition!
